Lick Of The Week

Vol. 1

Stuff Smith-C Jam Blues

Difficulty:  Intermediate

Prerequisite:  Blues Seminar

I wasn't always a huge fan of Stuff's playing, but as I've gotten older I've done a total 180 and now have a ton of love for Stuff!  This is one of his quintessential solos, and really encapsulates his groove based approach.  Even if you're not a Jazz fan, this is one of a hand full of solos EVERY STRING PLAYER should know .

Jean-Luc Ponty-Sunday Walk

Difficulty:  Intermediate/Advanced

Prerequisite:  None

The Album That took string playing into the modern era.  This album recorded in 1967 when Ponty was just out of his teens, set a high water mark for violin players and represents my favorite era of Jean Luc.  While the solo is tricky, this lesson explores aspects of Jean-Luc's style that less advanced players can study and learn from.
